PhD thesis handed in!
Friday the 5th of June 2026 at 18:31, permalink: 2026.06.05.18.31.PhDhandedin, edit

A couple of days ago I finally handed in my PhD thesis. It only took me a little over 14 years of part-time work, years off to work on my health, and a giant amount of patience and belief from the people around me.

Starting as a combined master's and PhD project in 2012, I've took quite the indirect route to get to this point - but the thesis is finally handed in, and I'm going to defend it in mid-September.

The thesis covers the neutron and X-ray scattering experiments that I have been working on, focusing on the structural oddities of the superconducting La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4+y) cuprate.

As with my bachelor's and master's theses, I have made a small page here on the website for the project. Head over there if you want to see the full thesis (and the defense and related things will also be there, once ready). The page also has high-resolution (and vector) versions of all my illustrations, in case you want to use them yourself.

A few example pages from the thesis

There is still the defense ahead, so the project is not quite finished yet, but handing in the thesis is the end of a long chapter. After spending so many years on it, it is a bit strange to think that the writing is finally done. Then again, I'm sure I'll find a few things to edit and add during the defence preparations and the defence itself, so I expect there will be a second version on the project page later.

I continued developing the custom LaTeX class that I originally created for my master's thesis. It has grown considerably over the years, with lots of additions since the first version: thumb indexes, graphics in the part and chapter headers, first-citations in the margins, footnote symbols in the margins, icons for different bibliography entry types, and so much more. It is the definition of spaghetti code, but one day I may clean it up enough to release it properly.
